Men's Volleyball's Season-Opener Spoiled at Mt. Ida

NEWTON Mass. – Lesley University had their 2017 season opener spoiled on the road tonight as host Mt. Ida College rolled past the Lynx 3-0 (25-4, 25-11, 25-15) in a non-conference bout at the Mustang Athletic Center.

Mt. Ida, now winner of three straight, improves to 4-1 on the season following the victory while the Lynx kick off their 2017 campaign at 0-1.

The Mustangs overwhelmed the Lynx in their home opener, breaking their recently inked program record with 25 service aces and rolling by scores of 25-4, 25-11, 25-15.

The Lynx were led by three kills from senior Jason Hulteen (Galena, Ohio) and got three assists and two digs out of junior Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.). Sophomore Daniel Flanagan (Wellesley, Mass.) recorded one kill and dug out three balls in his collegiate debut while junior Mykael Tucker (Taunton, Mass.) anchored the defense with a team-high four digs. Hulteen and sophomore Steven Newman (Natick, Mass.) each recorded a service ace for the visitors.

Mt. Ida senior Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) notched nine service aces in the match while also knocking down seven kills. Sophomore Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) added eight aces of his own led the Mustangs with nine kills. Freshman Carter Amadon (Athol, Mass.) and sophomore Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.) pitched in with three kills apiece.

Mount Ida hit .500 in the opening set, making just one error on 14 attempts. The offense ran through sophomore Nathan Sprengle (Williamstown, N.J.), who put up 19 assists and had three service aces of his own. The Mustangs registered 25 aces as a team.

Lesley will return to the floor on Saturday when they hit the road to Dean College for a 1:00p start with the Bulldogs. Mt. Ida will also be traveling on Saturday and prepare for a tri-match with Sage and Keuka.
