Mount Ida Powers Past Men's Volleyball

NEWTON, Mass. – Lesley University fell to Mount Ida College 3-0 in a non-conference men's volleyball contest at Mount Ida Athletic Center on Monday night. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-18 to snap an eleven game losing streak and improve to 7-20 overall.

Senior James Ames (W. Hartford, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 kills, while Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) added nine kills in the win for Mount Ida, who hit .375 in each of the first two sets and ended the night with a .291 attacking percentage. Senior Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) set up the offense and piled up 31 assists.

Juniors Tyler Burns (Newtown, Pa.) and Jacob DiDomenico (North Providence, R.I.) were the high men for Lesley with eight kills apiece and were in on seven total blocks combined. Senior Chris Barletta (Valrico, Fla.) added three kills while freshman Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.) set a new career-high with 18 assists. Senior C.Jay Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) posted a new season-high with ten digs.

The Mustangs trailed just twice in the match, opening up a 10-3 lead in the first set with a service ace by Griffenkranz. With the Mustangs leading 20-11, Alex Bonilla-Guevara (Cambridge, Mass.) served to a 5-0 run for Lesley and the Lynx pulled to a four-point deficit, which was as close as they would come, as kills by Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.), one of his six, and Ames helped win the last three points.

A 6-1 run to start set two paved the way for Mount Ida to stay in front all set. Though the lead stayed at nine or less, a service ace by Ames sealed the win for the Mustangs.

Lesley enjoyed their only leads at 2-1 and 5-4 in the third set, but Mount Ida responded by turning a 15-13 advantage into a 21-15 edge thanks to Gylan Flemming (Cambridge, Mass.), who recorded five kills in the match.

Two straight kills by Ames sealed the third set victory for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida returns to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play tomorrow evening as they travel to Johnson & Wales for a 7:00 pm contest. The Lynx (0-15) will get back in New England Collegiate Conference play and celebrate Senior Night against Elms College tomorrow at 8:00 pm.
