BROOKLINE, Mass. – Newbury College completed the season sweep of Lesley University with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-12) in New England Collegiate Conference action tonight in Brookline, Mass.The win improves the Nighthawks to 4-6 overall and 3-1 in NECC play while the Lynx fall to 0-9 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.
First year outside hitter Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) led the way to victory for the hosts, notching a team-high 10 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for a .529 attack percentage. Freshman Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) finished with eight kills while swinging .636 while sophomore Nile Fox (Hampton, Va.) was perfect from the floor with eight kills on eight attempts.
Lesley's left-handed sophomore Tyler Burns (Newton, Pa.) led the Lynx hitting .407 with a match-high 15 kills on 27 attempts and just four miscues. Classmate Jacob DiDomenico (N. Providence, R.I.) and junior Jess Cherry (Lancaster, Pa.) added three kills apiece while sophomore Mitchel Ulacco (Winchester, Mass.) set up the offense with 20 assists on the night.
Newbury came out of the gate strong, hitting .462 as a team with 16 kills on 26 attempts in the opening set. Freshman Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.) was nearly perfect from the floor notching three kills on five attempts while classmate, Robidoux posted three kills on four attempts and just one miscue as the Nighthawks took game one 25-14.
The Nighthawks did not slow down in the second set as Thorne was flawless from the floor, tallying five kills on eight attempts for a staggering .625 attack percentage. Senior Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H.) followed suit with four kills on nine attempts while registering one block assist en route to the 25-16 win to take the two-game advantage.
Up two games to zero, the Nighthawks kept their foot on the accelerator in the third set. First year setter Michael Holihan (Northampton, Pa.) was perfect form the floor notching three kills on three attempts to go along with two block assists to seal the match with a 25-12 third set victory.
The Lynx will be back in action tomorrow, Friday February 20th when they host Endicott College at 8:00 p.m. while the Nighthawks return to the court Saturday morning as they host Elms College at 11:00 A.M.
