Men's Volleyball Opens Season at JWU Tip-Off Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Lesley University wrapped up the two-day Johnson & Wales University Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon, coming out 0-4 following losses to Lasell College, Keuka College, Johnson & Wales, and Cairn University.

Lasell College junior Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after he led the Lasers to a first-place finish with a 4-0 record. Johnson & Wales University also posted a 4-0 record, however took second place at the tournament after the tie was broken by point ratio. Cairn and Keuka had 2-2 records for the tournament while Purchase joined the Lynx with a 0-4 mark.

The Lynx will look to register their first win of the season when they return to the court on Tuesday as they travel to Emerson College at 7:00p.

Sophomore Tyler Burns (Newton, Pa.) led the Lynx attack as he led the squad in kills in each of the four matches. Burns registered eight kills and a .211 hitting percentage in Lesley's opening 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-10) loss against Lasell College on Saturday before adding five kills in a 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-12) setback to Keuka. Junior C.Jay Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) added three kills and a team-best five digs against the Highlanders. Sophomore setter Mitchel Ulacco (Winchester, Mass.) combined for 20 assists in the pair of matches.

Burns continued to have success at the net in day two as he combined for 14 kills in the two matches. In a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-7) loss to Johnson & Wales, sophomore Jason Hulteen (Galena, Ohio) connected for three kills and swung at an impressive .600 clip while Sutton also added three kills and once again led the team with six digs.

In the final match of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-15) loss to Cairn, Burns connected for a season-best 10 kills while digging out four balls on the defensive side. Sutton chipped in with four kills and led the Lynx for the fourth straight match with ten digs. Ulacco set up the offense with a team-best 13 assists.

Lesley will open their home schedule on Thursday when they welcome Mount Ida College to Cambridge. First serve for that match is set for 8:00p.
