Newbury takes two from Lesley

BROOKLINE, Mass. - All fifteen Newbury men's volleyball players saw the floor in tonight's double header with Lesley University, at Pappas Gymnasium.  The Nighthawks flew away with two victories in the double header in a 3-0, 3-0 sweep.    

In the first match of the night, Newbury quickly proved their dominance by winning 30-9, 30-17, and 30-13.  Newbury's freshman setter Matthew Talamantes (Sylmar, Calif.) collected his 1000th assist of the season after only the 5th of his ten total assists in game one of the match.  Matt Sadowski (Feeding Hills, Mass.) came up with a team high 6 digs in the match, and LeRoy Cooper (Claremont, Calif.) and Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, Mass.) threw in 6 kills a piece for the Nighthawks.   

For the Lynx of Lesley University, Clayton Janer (Guilford, Conn.) collected 17 assists, most of which came from the 9 kills Mike Labagh (Elizabethtown, Pa.) contributed.  Labagh also had 7 digs in the first match. 

In the second match of the night, Newbury split the setting responsibilities between Sadowski and Matthew Hartman (Feeding Hills, Mass.) who came up with 32 assists between them.  The Nighthawks defensive specialist Timothy MacMillan (Haverhill, Mass.) picked up a game high 13 digs, and libero Michael Biuso (South Setauket, N.Y.) was close behind with 8.  James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md.) had an impressive 5 total services aces to go along with 7 kills in the match.  The final scores for the match were 30-13, 30-19, and 30-17.   

Janer completed the evening with an additional 14 assists in match two, and both Labagh and Scott Wheeler (East Hampton, Conn.) came up with 6 kills each in the loss.  Lesley is 1-16 this season overall and 0-9 in NECVA New England divisional play.   

The Nighthawks are currently ranked 7th overall in the NECVA standings, and with a 22-5 record, they are leading the entire conference in total wins this season.  In NECVA New England divisional play, the Nighthawks are ranked second with an 8-1 record. Newbury will travel to Wisconsin for the week of March 9th to March 15th, playing five matches in the mid-west during the college's spring break.
