Zona Propels Lynx to Season Sweep of Wildcats with 5-4 Victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – First year Evan Zona (Hingham, Mass.) won a hard fought sixth singles match to propel the Lynx to the 5-4 victory over Wheelock College in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Wednesday evening. The Lynx sweep the season series after defeating the Wildcats by an identical score earlier in the week.

The Lynx wasted little time taking doubles, 2-1. First year Peter Weiss (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Adam Valladares (Middleton, N.H.) defeated Josh DiMassa and Brody Niemann (Tolland, Conn.) in third doubles, 8-2. First years Patrick Corcoran (West Hartford, Conn.) and Evan Flaherty (Scituate, Mass.) won second doubles by an identical 8-2 score.

Wheelock was able to salvage one doubles match. Sophomore Arvin Hedayaty (Tarzana, Calif.) and senior Matt Brown (Angola, Ind.) were able to out-battle first doubles tandem of junior Niko Marcolini (Newbury, Mass.) and Beowulf Urban (Blue Hills, Maine), 8-5.

In the singles portion of the competition, junior Max Anthony (Boston, Mass.) made quick work of the Wildcats' Connor Mahoney in fifth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Corcoran won his fourth singles match in two sets as well, 6-0, 6-2.

Zona took the 1-0 match advantage winning the first set of the sixth singles, 6-4, then jumped up two games to one in the second set but DiMassa was not going away quietly. DiMassa responded winning three straight games to take a 4-2 lead.  Zona bared down and tied up the second set at four. He did not look back as he held off the DiMassa to take the second set, 7-5 and clinch the match for the Lynx.

Lesley climbs back to .500 on the season improving to 3-3 including 2-1 in conference action while Wheelock drops to 0-8 and 0-5 in NECC action. The Lynx return to the courts Friday April 7th when they travel to North Dartmouth to face UMass.-Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m.
