Leopards Claw Past Men's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology raced to a 9-0 sweep of Lesley University in a non-conference tennis match this afternoon at the Nicholas Athletics Center. The Leopards improve to 4-8 on the year while the Lynx wrap up their regular season with a 3-11 overall record.

The Leopards top doubles duo of James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) opened up doubles play with an 8-0 win over Lesley's Jack Tortorici (Grass Valley, Calif.) and Billy Baker (Sacramento, Calif.) while Wentworth's Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) and Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) topped James Webb (San Francisco, Calif.) and Joshua Marcellini (New Sharon, Maine), also by an 8-0 count, in second doubles. The Lynx forfeited in third doubles to give the Leopards a 3-0 match lead.

Wentworth freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) kicked off singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph in the number one slot before senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marcellini in second singles.

Wentworth sophomores Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.), Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.), and James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) each recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories in third, fourth, and fifth singles, respectively, while the Lynx forfeited in the sixth and final singles match to give the visitors the 9-0 win.

The Leopards will conclude their regular season schedule on Wednesday when they travel to Gordon College for a Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup at 4:00p.

Lesley is locked in a virtual tie with Newbury College for the fourth and final spot in the New England Collegiate Conference tournament that will start on Saturday, April 25th. The Nighthawks will wrap up their conference schedule on Wednesday when they host Mitchell College at 3:00p. The Lynx will punch their ticket to the postseason with a Newbury loss.
