Men's Tennis Earns First Win with Sweep of Wheelock

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's tennis team picked up their first win of the 2014 campaign with a 9-0 sweep over Wheelock College this evening in New England Collegiate Conference action at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. With the win, the Lynx improve to 1-9 on the season and 1-7 in NECC play while the Wildcats fall to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in conference matches.

The Lesley tandem of freshman Harrison Sidell (Newhall, Calif.) and sophomore Trevor Martin (Whitinsville, Mass.) picked up an 8-0 victory over Wheelock senior Claire O'Donoghue (East Haven, Conn.) and freshman Will Spofford (Kennebunk, Maine)  in the first doubles flight. Freshman Billy Baker (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Chris Hunt (San Diego, Calif.) followed with an 8-3 win in second doubles over John Shearer and Alex Miner. The Lynx completed the doubles sweep as sophomore Jack Tortorici (Grass Valley, Calif.) and senior Aqib Shah (Watertown, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-1 win in the No. 3 slot, defeating senior Kayla Arsenault (Eliot, Maine) and freshman Linda Le (Methuen, Mass.).

Harrison Sidell continued his impressive night with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Claire O'Donoghue in the first singles flight. Martin followed with his second victory of the evening, earning a 6-3, 6-1 decision over John Shearer. Billy Baker topped Alex Miner in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.

After dropping the first set 3-6, Aqib Shah came back to win the second and third set 6-2 and 10-7 to claim victory over Will Spofford in No. 2 singles.

Chris Hunt and Jack Tortorici concluded the night with 6-0, 6-0 wins in No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

The Lynx will be back in action on Saturday, April 19th when they travel to NECC foe Newbury College. First serve for that match is set for 11:00a. Wheelock will return to the court on Thursday, April 17th when they travel to Leicester, Mass. for a match with Becker College.
