Men's Tennis Falls in Hard Fought Match to Newbury

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's tennis team dropped a hard fought match to Newbury College, 9-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's tennis action tonight at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 5-2 on the year and 3-1 in NECC play while the Lynx fall to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the conference.

Newbury's No. 1 doubles tandem of Christian Repunte (Burlington, Mass.) and Joey Verdon (Catskill, N.Y.) grabbed the victory over Lesley freshman Harrison Sidell (Newhall, Calif.) and Trevor Martin (Whitinsville, Mass.) in a tough 8-5 decision. After Nighthawks sophomore Antonios Tran (Chelsea, Mass.) and junior Wayne Gethers (Cambridge, Mass.) took an 8-0 decision in No. 2 doubles, Newbury completed the doubles sweep when Gerard Font-Ravenos (Barcelona, Spain) and Steve Carey (Andover, Mass.) topped Aqib Shah (Watertown, Mass.) and Jack Tortorici (Grass Valley, Calif.) 8-1 in the third doubles flight.

Repunte and Sidell battled again in No. 1 singles. Repunte captured a 7-5 first set win before retiring Sidell 6-2 in the second for the straight set victory. Tran defeated Shah in 6-0, 6-0 fashion in No. 2 singles to confirm the win for the Nighthawks before senior John Morgan (Cumberland, R.I.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Martin.

Font-Raventos earned a hard fought 7-5, 6-2 over Baker in No. 4 singles while Gethers defeated Hunt 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth singles match. Verdon completed the 9-0 sweep for the Nighthawks when he topped Tortorici 6-1, 6-3 in the sixth and final singles match of the night.

The Lynx will complete their three-game homestand on Tuesday, April 8th when they welcome Curry College in a non-conference matchup. The Nighthawks will play host to Suffolk University on Monday, April 7th at 3:30p in their first of two consecutive home matches.
