Mariners Sail Past Men's Tennis

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Mitchell College men's tennis team topped Lesley University with a 9-0 sweep over the Lynx in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action tonight at Buckingham, Browne, and Nichols. With the win, the Mariners improve to 2-1 on the year and an even 1-1 in NECC play while the Lynx fall to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

The first doubles tandem of Graham Cavanaugh (Redding, Conn.) and Zachary Simmons (Coventry, Conn.) topped Lesley senior Aqib Shah (Watertown, Mass.) and freshman Harrison Sidell (Newhall, Calif.) by an 8-0 score. Freshmen Orson Sinclair (New London, Conn.) and Adam Diaz (Bellerose Village, N.Y.) took victory in the second doubles flight with an 8-2 decision over Lesley freshman Billy Baker (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Chris Hunt (San Diego, Calif.). The Mariners completed the sweep in the doubles portion of the match when Chris McKeon (North Scituate, R.I.) and Michael Edwards (Bozrah, Conn.) defeated Jack Tortorici (Grass Valley, Calif.) and Trevor Martin (Whitinsville, Mass.), 8-4.

Cavanaugh and Simmons kept their momentum moving to start the singles portion of the night as they both took 6-0, 6-0 wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches,  respectively. Sinclair joined Simmons and Cavanaugh with a 6-0, 6-0 victory of his own in No. 4 singles with a win over Baker.

In the third singles match, Diaz took a 6-0 first set before retiring Martin 6-2 in the second set while Randy Coons (Yonkers, N.Y.) topped Lesley junior Tyler Armstrong (Grand Isle, Vt.) 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles.

Mitchell sophomore Michael Berman (Fair Lawn, N.J.) completed the 9-0 sweep for the Mariners when he defeated Tortorici 6-3, 6-0.

Lesley will be back in action on Tuesday, April 1st when they travel to Becker College at 3:00p. Mitchell will also return to the court on Tuesday when they play host to Regis College at 3:30p in New London, Conn.
