Lynx, Saints Battle to 0-0 in 2OT

Cambridge, Mass—The Lesley University Men's Soccer team hosted Emmanuel College in a non-conference battle at Edwards Field on Saturday afternoon. Neither team was able to net a goal in the match and ended with 0-0 tie after the second overtime.  Lesley now sits at 3-5-2 on the season, while Emmanuel is 1-5-4.

The first half proved to be an even contest with very limited shots and corner kick opportunities for both teams.   The Lynx had the most promising opportunity in the 20th minute of play but Saints goalie Jonathan Ferrarini kept the Lynx off the board. Senior Anthony Vitta (Oceanside, NY) sent a corner kick right to the head of Freshman Liam Perrine (Pleasantville, NY) but Ferrarini made a great diving save to keep the score at an even 0-0.   The first half ended with both teams only attempting 2 shots each.

Lesley put pressure on the Saints defense in the last five minutes of play with a few close chances to take the lead, but the shots struck just high of hitting the net.  With 30 seconds remaining the Saints had a free kick attempt that was headed out of the Lesley zone by Sophomore defender Ben Heischuber (Holliston, MA).  The defensive header gave Emmanuel one last opportunity to net a goal for the win off a corner kick, but the Lynx defense was able to clear the ball and send the match into overtime.

"It was a great effort today, by far our best match of the season," said head coach James Costa.  "We had opportunities we just couldn't bury the ball when we had the chances and that made all the difference."  Both overtimes saw limited shot attempts for both teams to force the match to end in a tie.

Lesley held the advantage in shots 14-7, while Emmanuel took the lead on corners 7-6. The Lynx are back on the pitch tomorrow when they travel to Rivier University for another non-conference match.  The Saints next play Albertus Magnus on October 4th.
