Pereira, Vitta Score as Men's Soccer Races Past Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. --- The Lesley University men's soccer team traveled to Becker College and cut down the host Hawks 2-0 a New England Collegiate Conference match on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Lynx, winners of two in a row and three of their last four, improve to 4-10-1 overall and 3-2 in the NECC while the Hawks drop to 1-13-1 and 1-5 against conference opponents.

Lesley got on the board in the 23rd minute when junior forward Nuno Pereira (Sao Filipe, Fogo, Cape Verde) recovered a deflected ball and shot it back into the bottom right corner to put the Lynx ahead 1-0. That score held up until the halftime break. Pereira, the reigning NECC Player of the Week, has been on an offensive tear of late as he has scored seven goals in his last eight games.

Just 1:20 into the second period, the Lynx scored their insurance goal on a breakaway when junior midfielder Anthony Vitta (Oceanside, N.Y.) burst past the defense and shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to make the score 2-0. Vitta's tally was his first of the season while he also earned the  assist on Pereira's goal for a three-point afternoon.

Becker freshman defender Jonathan Gonzalez (Douglas, Mass.) came up with a team save with 22 minutes remaining, deflecting a header by Lynx freshman Gerry Chica (Wallingford, Conn.) and keep the match at a two goal deficit.

Becker sophomore goalkeeper Devin Ramos (Warwick, R.I.) finished with six saves between the pipes, while Lesley junior netminder James Webb (San Francisco, Calif.) earned the shutout. The Lynx outshot the Hawks, 17-1, with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Becker will be back on the pitch on Thursday, October 20th when they host Worcester State University with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff. Lesley travels to Wheelock College on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. game.
