Men's Soccer Marches Past Top-Seeded Cadets in ECAC Quarterfinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The eighth-seeded Lesley University Lynx scored two goals in the first half to take down top-seeded Norwich University in an ECAC DIII New England Men's Soccer Quarterfinal upset tonight on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. The win, which was the first ECAC Championship Tournament victory in program history, propels the Lynx to the ECAC Semifinals where they will battle the fourth-seeded Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College. The Chargers earned their trip to the Semifinals with a 4-3 overtime win over Albertus Magnus College.

Endicott College will serve as the host for the Semifinals and Finals as they flew past Elms College 5-1 in their Quarterfinal match.

The Cadets pulled ahead early as sophomore Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) scored his 18th goal of the season when he finished a feed from classmate DJ Spears (San Antonio, Texas) in the second minute of play.

The lead would not last long, however, as Lynx sophomore Erik Johansen (West Harrison, N.Y.) would even the match less than four minutes later when he put one past Norwich keeper Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) for his ninth tally of the season.

With 1:46 to play in the opening half, Lesley sophomore Mahmoud Chabarek (Allepo, Syria) would give the Lynx a 2-1 edge as he found the back of the net on a shot from 35 yards out that sailed past the outstretched fingertips of Hallstrom. The goal was Chabarek's second of the season while senior defender Ray Cohen (Coventry, Conn.) was credited with the assist on the play.

After the initial goal, Lynx junior keeper Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) was solid in net, as he turned away three shots in the opening frame. Donley would finish with four stops in the match.

Lesley's offense would continue to keep the Cadet defensive unit busy in the second stanza as they outshot the hosts by an 11-5 margin in the final 45 minutes.

The Lynx nearly added an insurance marker in the 64th minute of action when junior Ryan Richardson (Santa Barbara, Calif.) sent a drive that ricocheted off the crossbar and Johansen's opportunity on the rebound was blocked by a Cadet defender. In the 86th minute, junior Walker Panek (Carlsbad, Calif.) also had a shot deflect off the bar that denied the Lynx of extending their lead.

Donley earned the win for the Lynx and moves to 8-6-4 on the year and 1-1-0 in two career ECAC matches. Hallstrom took the loss for the Cadets, who end their season at 13-7-2.
