NEWTON, Mass. – Despite two overtime periods, neither Lesley University nor Mount Ida College could find the back of the net first as the teams settled for a draw on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The non-conference tilt was the second of the year for each team, and both remained unbeaten with 1-0-1 records.
Mount Ida junior goalkeeper Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.) made five stops to earn his second consecutive shutout. Pils has now posted 200 minutes of scoreless work between the pipes.
Lesley had a 12-11 edge in shots, but the Mustangs had the better of the possession and more chances throughout the game, illustrated by their 16-1 margin in corner kicks.
The Mustangs had eight corner kick opportunities in the first ten-minute overtime period alone, but the Lynx were able to squander any opportunity.
It looked as though Mount Ida had taken the lead with thirty minutes to play in the second half when junior forward Michael Templeton (Charlestown, N.H.) found the back of the net, but the play was called back when Templeton was deemed to be in an offside position.
With just under half an hour to play in regulation, Lesley sophomore Walker Panek (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit the crossbar on a free-kick, one of the Lynx best chances on the afternoon.
Fifteen minutes later, Harrison Sidell (Newhall, Calif.) almost put one in for the visitors, as he was on the end of a ball in the box that Pils lost sight of before the goalie came up with an important save to deflect the ball out of bounds.
The first ten minutes of overtime was dominated by the Mustangs, though they produced just one shot with their eight corner kick chances. Lesley outshot Mount Ida 3-0 in the second overtime, and Pils came up with two stops to preserve the clean sheet.
Freshman Elias Mejia (Freehold, N.J.) also looked dangerous for the Mustangs, firing two shots on net and sparking several scoring chances.
Senior Nathan Trucks (Guilford, Conn.) played the first half in net for Lesley, and made three saves, while sophomore Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.) manned the goal for the final 65 minutes of play, making two stops.
Lesley will continue a long road trip when they head to Eastern Nazarene on Thursday at 4:00p. The Mustangs have another non-conference home match up next on the schedule, welcoming in Roger Williams on Thursday at 4:00 p.
