Nighthawks edge Lynx 3-2

Nighthawks edge Lynx 3-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a match up of New England Collegiate Conference opponents, Newbury College defeated Lesley University 3-2.  The two teams exchanged goals throughout the match, but an early second half goal by Newbury senior John Mawson (Amherst, Mass.) gave the Nighthawks a lead they would not relinquish.

Lesley fell into an early 1-0 hole after an unfortunate misplay in the backfield caused the Lynx to score on their own net just third seconds into the match.

The Lynx would knot the score at 1-1 in the 32nd minute as leading goal scorer Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.) found the back of the net.  Senior Zach Rocha (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded an assist on the play.

Newbury would not take long to regain the lead as senior William Maddock (Marshfield, Mass.) scored a go ahead goal off a lead pass from fellow captain Mawson.  The time of the goal was 39:03.

Under four minutes later, Reeves took it unto himself to score another game-tying goal as his shot deflected off a Nighthawks defender and sailed over keeper William McNally's (Grafton, Mass.) head.

Lesley and Newbury stayed tied through the remainder of the first half with the score at 2-2.

Mawson struck the game-winning goal at 52:11 and catapulted his Nighthawks teammates to a NECC victory over the Lynx.

With the victory, Newbury improved to 3-10-0 (1-2-0 NECC) while Lesley dropped to 4-8-1 (2-1-0 NECC).

The Lynx will be in action next against Emerson College on Thursday at home starting at 8:00 pm.  Newbury will visit UMass-Boston on the same day at 3:30 pm.
