Cold second half drops Lynx at Newbury, 75-60

BROOKLINE, MA -- Junior guard John Sanchez enjoyed his finest game of the month with game-highs of 25 points and seven assists, but 22 percent second half shooting dropped the Lynx short in the team's quest for its first NECC victory, 75-60, Thursday night.

A trio of double-digit scorers led Newbury to its second win over Lesley in two weeks. Tim Young led the Nighthawks with 19 points, while Peterson Bernard and Eric Watson followed with 15 and 14, respectively.

Lesley shot 50 percent in the first half in jumping out to a 37-36 halftime lead. A six-point Newbury lead in the final 4:26 of the first was met with a 9-2 Lynx run featuring seven points from Sanchez. After a Young three-pointer put the Nighthawks ahead, Sanchez beat the buzzer on a layup that sent Lesley in up 37-36.

The second half was controlled by Newbury from the outset, as Watson opened the frame with a three-point play and followed it with another layup that started a 12-0 run, more than enough cushion for the Nighthawks. A Grant Cobb jumper cut the Lynx deficit to single digits, 50-42 at the 12:41 mark, but Young scored six straight as part of his own 8-2 run that distanced Newbury for good.

For Lesley, which shot a stone cold 5-23 (22 percent) in the second, Jesus Trejo fell a board shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds on the night. Thorton Paul added eight points on 2-4 shooting from distance, but Newbury's trio of double-digit scorers, which shot 17-35 for 48 points, was too much to handle.

After besting Lesley for the second time in nine days, Newbury improves to 4-11 overall, 3-3 in league play. Now 3-11 on the year and 0-4 in the NECC, Donald Morris' Lynx travel to Becker on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
