The Newbury College men’s basketball team rebounded from the loss to Eastern Nazarene to defeat the Lynx of Lesley University, 68-61, in New England Collegiate Conference action Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Timothy Young (Brockton, MA/Brockton) picked up his 211th point of the season to lead the Nighthawks to the victory.

After Newbury began the game with a 6-0 run during the first five minutes of action, Lesley came back with their own 6-2 run but could never gain control of the lead, which was the tone for most of the game. The Nighthawks took a 31-21 lead into the locker room behind Young’s 11 point first half performance and staved off a valiant comeback in the second by the Lynx.

Lesley junior Jesus Trejo (Methuen, MA/Methuen) netted nine of his team-high 13 points in the second as the Lynx outscored the Nighthawks 40-37 but it was not enough. Young continued his red-hot shooting into the second adding another 12 points to his first half 11 for his game-high 23 points.

Newbury junior guard John Rowley Jr. (Hartford, CT/Rockville) was also solid in the win tallying 22 points while Lesley sophomore Bryant Itonyo (Medford, MA/Medford) tied his teammate with a team-high of 13 points. Senior Alex Green (Baton Rouge, LA/Robert E. Lee) and junior Jonathan Cruz (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) rounded out the Lynx in double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-1 in the conference and 4-8 overall while the Lynx fall to 1-2 in the NECC and 4-10 overall. Newbury will return to the hard-court on Tuesday as they travel to Nashua, NH to face Daniel Webster college. Tip-off’s at 7:30pm.
