CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In the first conference game of the
2009-2010 season for both the Lesley University and Daniel Webster
College men’s basketball squads, the Lynx defeated the Eagles
64-61 in overtime. Lesley improved to 4-8 (1-0 NECC) while Daniel
Webster dropped to 4-6 (0-1 NECC).
Lesley’s Alex Green (BATON ROUGE, La./Robert E. Lee) scored a
season-best 19 points on 9-of-18 from the floor with four rebounds
and three steals. Green’s 11 point first half effort helped
give the Lynx a 34-23 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles stormed back behind 13 points from
freshman guard Keith Speed (COLUMBUS, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) who was
part of a Daniel Webster second half offense that outscored Lesley
30-19. Speed finished with a game-high 21 points and added three
rebounds, three assists, and a steal to his overall solid
effort.
With the scored tied at 53-53 at the end of regulation, Daniel
Webster came out in the first possession into overtime with a made
three-pointer by John Hickson (SPRINGFIELD, Mass./Cathedral).
Lesley, however, went on a 7-0 to regain the lead. Free throws down
the stretch by Jesus Trejo (METHUEN, Mass./Methuen), John Sanchez
(CARSON, Calif./Saint John Bosco) and Jonathan Cruz (HAVERHILL,
Mass./Haverhill) solidified the three-point win for the Lynx.
Trejo finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds. Sanchez had one of
his best performances of the season with 17 points, five assists,
and four rebounds.
Also contributing for Daniel Webster was Chris Hanson (SALEM,
Mass./Salem) who despite a slow first half, ended up with 15
points.
Lesley will next travel to Elms College on January 12 for a 6:00 pm
start. Daniel Webster travels to Mitchell College on January 16 and
plays at 3:00 pm.
