LONGMEADOW, Mass. - The New England Collegiate Conference has honored Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) with the Player of the Week award after a dominating performance against Curry College, a game in which the Lynx erased a 20-point deficit to force overtime and eventually triumph 78-75. For Trejo, it is the first time in the 2008-2009 season that he has won Player of the Week honors.
Trejo finished one rebound shy of a 20-20 game as the sophomore center recorded 26 points and 19 rebounds. He was 12-of-23 shooting for a Lesley squad that held a 46-22 points in the paint advantage over the Colonels. Although Trejo struggled from the line (2-of-8), he compiled his second largest point total of the season. His best output of 28 came in a November game against Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Thirteen of Trejo's 19 rebounds came on the offensive glass as the Lesley out rebounded Curry 52-44 in the victory. The Lynx also bested the Colonels in second-chance points, 17 to 9, thanks in a large part to Trejo's rebounding efforts.
In the game, Lesley was down 55-35 with 8:32 remaining but with swarming defensive methods that forced Curry turnovers, the Lynx were able to get back into a situation to tie the game.
Down two points with 10 seconds left, Jon Cruz (Haverhill, Mass.) cut into the lane and dumped a pass off to Trejo who laid in the game-tying bucket with no time remaining. Lesley would complete their comeback in overtime, outscoring Curry 12-9 in the extra period for the victory.
The men's basketball team will return to action in 2009 against Becker College on January 13 at 7:30 pm.
