WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Lesley University men's basketball team traveled to Westfield State College for a non-conference game, but the behind senior Dave Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass.) and Brandon Mauer (Pittsfield, Mass.) the Owls defeated the Lynx 83-62. Westfield State improved to 3-0 while Lesley dropped to 1-2.
Jaehnig dropped a game-high 27 points and Mauer complemented his teammate's effort with 23 points of his own in the 21 point victory. Jaehnig also led Westfield State with five steals and tied other Owls players with seven rebounds and four steals.
For the Lynx, Jonathan Cruz (Haverhill, Mass.) scored 14 points and tallied two assists and two steals in the losing effort. Big men, Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) and Malcolm Andrews (Medford, Mass.) showed their presence in the low post scoring 13 and nine points, respectively. Andrews also recorded four blocks in the game.
Lesley grabbed an early 6-5 advantage in the first half, but Westfield State went on an 11-0 run to regain control of the game. The Owls maintained offensive control for the remainder of the half as they went into the break with a 43-24 lead at halftime.
The Owls stretched their lead to 28 points with 8:53 remaining in the game after Jaehnig slammed home one of his two dunks in the contest.
Westfield State dominated the glass, outrebounding Lesley 46-30 including a 16-7 advantage on the offensive end.
The Lynx were effective from the floor, hitting 41.5% of their shots but struggled beyond the arc as they delivered on only 3-of-18 attempts from three-point range.
Lesley will be in action on Saturday, November 22 at the Bridgewater State College D'Angelo/Subway Tip-Off Classic starting at 1:00 pm.
