Westfield State tops Lesley 92-84

WESTFIELD, Mass. - Lesley University had five players in double-figures but was unable to defeat Westfield State College.  The Lynx were downed 84-92 in their first ever meeting with Westfield State.

Joe Chatman (Boston, Mass.) led the Lynx with 18 points.  Chatman also added a game-high five steals and a team-high five assists.  Stanley Chamblain (Everett, Mass.), James Parker (Sandwich, Mass.), Mark Stevens (Las Vegas, Nev.), and Francis Cusick (Lexington, Mass.) added 18, 15, 11 and 10 points respectively.  Parker pulled down 11 rebounds to complete his first double-double of the season.

Westfield was led by Andrew Deffer who had 23 points.  Deffer got some quality support from Gavin Illongakoon who had 21 points.  Curtis Gadles had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Mauer added 12 points.

The Lynx trailed by five points at the half, but very quickly Westfield widened the gap.  Shooting over 65% from the field in the second half Westfield extended their lead to 14 points with 15:11 remaining in the game.

Lesley would refuse to go away that quietly.  With 11:09 remaining Stevens sank a jumper to bring Lesley to within two, capping off a 17-5 run.

Lesley would trade buckets with Westfield over the next several minutes before Westfield would begin to pull away.

With 3:37 to play Westfield led by 12 and it looked to be all over for the Lynx.  However, after two Chamblain free-throws, a Craig Johnson (Silver Springs, Md.) lay-up, and a Chamblain three, Lesley trailed by just five with 2:09 to play.  That was as close as they would get as Westfield held on for the eight point win.
