THE LEAD – For the second straight day, the Lesley University baseball team picked up a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader sweep over University of Maine Presque-Isle at Minuteman Field. The Lynx posted a 4-1 win in the opener before Jacob Nemergut fired a complete-game shutout to close out the Owls in the series finale, 13-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)

  • The Owls got on the board with their only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Joey Blake picked up the RBI on a sac fly to drive in Garrett Chadwick to give the visitors an early 1-0 cushion.
  • The game remained locked at 1-0 through the first four innings of action as Logan Watts and Spencer Harmon went back and forth in a pitcher's duel.
  • The Lynx finally broke into the scoring column in the fifth on a two-RBI double to left by Owen Kalagher to give Lesley the lead for good, moving the score to 2-1.
  • Following a five-pitch top of the sixth inning by Watts, Lesley added some insurance in the bottom of the frame with two more runs to bump the lead to 4-1. Justin Dennett delivered the damaged with a two-out two-RBI single to right to give the Lynx some breathing room heading into the final frame.
  • UMPI threatened in the seventh with a pair of singles by Romeo Harris and Ricky Goupille to put the tying run at bat but Watts retired the side to pick up the 4-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1)

  • Watts improves to 5-2 on the year with the complete-game victory, allowing just five hits, all singles, and the one unearned run while striking out three.
  • Dennett closed the game going 2-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Spencer pitched well in defeat falling to 1-3 on the year surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits.
  • The victory was the eighth straight for LU.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)

  • Nemergut was impressive for the second straight outing, tossing 7.0 innings of shutout ball to pick up the win on the mound. The junior allowed just four hits while striking out six to help the Lynx extend its winning streak to nine.
  • Lesley got all the run support it would need in the first inning, putting up a five-spot on the Owls powered by a two-RBI triple from Colby Jacobs.
  • Dennett belted a solo homer to left in the second to bump the lead to 6-0 before the hosts added three more runs in the third including an RBI triple from Jake Samela, moving the score to 9-0.
  • LU added some padding to the lead in the sixth as Zach Vosker and Miles Chamberlain drew bases loaded walks before Samela capped the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle to account for the 13-0 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 2)

  • Nemergut improved to 2-4 on the year and has not allowed an earned run in his last 14 innings pitched.
  • Dennett capped the day going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Samela was also 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
  • Timothy Burns paced UMPI with a 2-for-3 day including a ninth inning double.
  • Jordan Reffeor added two RBI on the game, a season-high while the RBIs for Vosker and Chamberlain were the first of their collegiate careers.
  • The nine-game winning streak is the longest since an eight-game stretch during the 2018 campaign and one-shy of the longest streak in program-history (10) which also happened earlier in the 2018 slate.
