Muratore Earns Second Victory of the Season, Lynx Sweep Spartans

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior right-hander Tom Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) earned his second victory of the season as the Lynx completed their first doubleheader sweep of 2017 defeating D'Youville College, Saturday afternoon. Muratore tossed a complete game allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven in a 3-1 game one victory.

Game 1: Lesley 3, D'Youville 1

The Spartans were quick to score in the home half pushing across one run but it was all they were able to muster against the Long Island right-hander. Muratore settled down and kept Spartans off the board over the next six innings to keep the Lynx in the ballgame. In the second inning he struck out the side with a single mixed in.

First year Matthew Warner (San Diego, Calif.) came through with a clutch two-out base-hit to drive in a pair of runs in the top of the third. The Southern California native ripped a single back where it came from to plate sophomore shortstop Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, N.J.) and senior third baseman Mike Slaby (Foxborough, Mass.) to give the Lynx the 2-1 lead.

It was more than enough for Muratore but Warner provided him with an insurance run in two innings later. First year rightfielder Steven DePalma (Albertson, N.Y.) reached on an error by the shortstop then advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. After sophomore first baseman Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, Mass.) flew out to rightfield, Warner drove in DePalma with the Lynx's third run.

With plenty of run support, Muratore retired the next nine batters he faced to remain perfect on the season and improve to 2-0.

Game 2: Lesley 3, D'Youville 2

In game two of the doubleheader, the Lynx took advantage of a Spartan mistake in the field in the bottom of the first. Junior Justin Clark (Chino Hills, Calif.) ripped a one-out double down the leftfield line to bring home Slaby, who began the inning reaching on an error, to take the 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last for long as the Spartans answered grabbing the run back in the top of the second to tie the ballgame back up at 1-1. It stayed tied until the bottom of the third when Pumphret tagged Spartan starter Steve Vik for two runs blasting a two-run homerun to take a 3-1 lead.

D'Youville chipped away at the deficit getting one back in the top of the fifth but it was as close as they would get. Making his second start of the season, sophomore right-hander Nick DeGrenier (Marshfield, Mass.) earned his second victory of the season tossing 5.2 innings allowing just two runs on eight hits while striking out four. Junior right-hander Jeff Heinz (Portsmouth, N.H.) received his second save the season going the last 1.1 innings while striking out one.

Lesley will complete their 2017 Florida trip tomorrow afternoon with a twin-bill against Minnesota-Morris. First pitch slated for 12:00 p.m.
