Newbury Completes Season Sweep of Lynx

The Newbury College men's volleyball team completed the season sweep of Lesley University with the 3-0 victory in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Thursday evening. Reigning NECC Rookie of the Week, first year outside hitter Jake Powell (Salinas, Calif.) was nearly flawless from the floor, notching 15 kills on 22 attempts for a career single-match high .682 attack percentage.

Newbury set the tone early, taking the first set 25-14 to take the quick 1-0 match advantage. Powell led the way tallying three kills on five attempts while registering six defense digs. However, Lesley was resilient and battled. Senior right side hitter Sean Randall (Fremond, Calif.) recorded four digs while first-year outside hitter Spencer Irwin (Somers, N.Y.) led the Lynx offense in the first set with a four kills.

In the second set, Powell and senior middle blocker Jarryl McKey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Nighthawk offense, hitting an impressive .700 as a team to a commanding 25-6 victory. While Powell registered a set-high six kills in the second game, McKey was nearly perfect from the field tallying four kills on five attempts for a remarkable .600 attack percentage.

The Nighthawks remained red-hot from the floor, hitting .364 en route to 25-9 third set victory. Powell led Newbury notching six kills on nine attempts while registering four digs. McKey finished the night with six kills on eight attempts for an outstanding .625 attack percentage.

Newbury improves to 6-10 and 3-4 in conference action while the loss drops Lesley to 0-12 and 0-7 against NECC opponents. Winning four of their last five games, the Nighthawks will look to push their win-streak to three games when they return to the hard-court tomorrow evening when they travel up Commonwealth Avenue for a 5:00 p.m. tilt against NECC foe Regis College. The Lynx return to action on Saturday March 23rd when they host conference foe Elms College at 12:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
