Mount Ida Too Much for Lynx

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –The Mount Ida College Mustangs improve to 3-2 on the year as they beat the Lynx in straight sets, 3-0, tonight at Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols. With the loss, Lesley, who opened up a four-match homestand tonight, drops to 0-4 on the season. The score of the sets were 25-12, 25-16, and 25-18.

With Lesley trailing 7-6 in the first set, Mount Ida scored three unanswered points to give them a four-point cushion, 10-6. That sparked an impressive run of offense as the Mustangs outscored the Lynx 15-5 throughout the rest of the opening game, rolling to a 25-12 win.

In the second set, the Lynx opened up a 3-0 advantage behind a kill from freshman Spencer Irwin (Somers, NY) and aggressive serving from sophomore Herbin Berreondo (Brighton, Mass.). The Mustangs climbed right back into to, capitalizing on back-to-back Lesley errors and a kill by junior Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.). The teams would exchange points before Lesley was able to catch a 13-10 lead following two Melvin Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) kills. Mount Ida fought back to tie it at 15-15 and then scored six straight behind the service of junior Nick Melillo (North Haven, Conn.). The Mustangs finished the set on a 10-1 run.

The Mustangs took advantage of some early Lesley errors in the third set to take a 7-3 lead and never looked back. With the score 14-10, Mount Ida would go on an 8-2 spurt to take a commanding 22-12 lead. The Lynx would then score six of the next eight points, but it was too little too late as the Mustangs closed out the match with a 25-18 third set victory.

Morales had a team-high five kills for the Lynx while freshman Jess Cherry (Lancaster, Pa.) finished with 11 assists. Freshman C.J. Sutton (Billerica, Mass.) had 8 digs while senior Sean Randall (Fremont, Calif.) had seven.

Schibi had a match-high eight kills for the Mustangs while freshman Jadon Jahnsen Tuilosega (Hemet, Calif.) finished with six. Freshman Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) finished with 10 digs and freshman Brady Rodriguez (Longwood, Fla.) had a match-high 20 assists.

The Lynx will play game two of their four-game homestand on Wednesday night as they play host to Lasell at 8:00p while Mount Ida will also be home on Wednesday when they will host MIT at 6:00p.
