Lynx fall to Mountaineers on senior day, 3-0

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Southern Vermont improved to 7-3 in New England Collegiate Conference men's volleyball play with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-10, 25-13) win over host Lesley University on senior day at the Nicholas Athletic Center Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers hit .347 and held Lesley to a -.031 average, with Joseph Dighton (Riverside, CA/La Sierra) hitting a near-perfect .786, crushing 12 kills with only one error in 14 attempts to lead SVC. Freshman Anthony Contreras (Norwalk, CA/Norwalk) totaled seven kills with two errors in 11 attempts for a .455 average.

Max Hoevenaar (Orlando, FL/Castle Christian) led the Lynx with six kills but with nine attack errors, and on his senior day, Christian Domingo (Los Angeles, CA/College of Canyons) followed with four kills. Melvin Morales (Chelsea, MA/Chelsea) led the team with 10 set assists.

Southern Vermont broke the first two games open with extended runs to start the sets. The Mounties opened up a 14-2 lead in Game 1 with two service aces from Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, CA/Eagle Rock) and two kills from Dighton. In the middle set, four Dighton kills propelled a 15-3 Mountaineers lead in the team's 25-10 win.

Two Lynx service aces and two Hoevenaar kills kept the Lynx within seven points at 15-8 in Game 3, but a 7-0 run featuring a pair of Contreras kills broke the contest open in the Mounties 25-13 win.

The match marked the last home contest for Domingo, a three-year letter winner who led the team in kills and kills per set as a junior and entered Saturday tied for the team lead in overall kills as a senior.

At 2-15 (2-9 NECC) Lesley travels to Daniel Webster College on Wednesday, while Southern Vermont plays host to Elms College on Thursday.
