CAMBRIDGE, MA – Emerson used three sets to best Lesley, topping the Lynx 25-12, 25-18, 25-23 in North East Collegiate Volleyball Association play Tuesday night.
For Emerson (7-12), freshman Nadav Swarttz (Newton, MA/Newton South) led the way with a match-high 14 kills on 22 attempts for a sizzling .545 hitting percentage. Lions senior Evan Ong (Pasadena, CA/St. Francis) led all players with 12 digs, while Steve Selnick (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) added 10 digs to go with a match-best 22 set assists.
Lesley (1-20) freshman William Lau (Charlestown, MA/Boston Latin) led the team with seven kills. Senior Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) added six, but the team's 20 attack errors to only 22 kills kept the Lynx to only a .020 hitting percentage to a more efficient .255 clip for the visitors.
In the opening set, the Lions jumped on Lesley early, going up 5-1 after three straight Lynx errors. Emerson then, with freshman Chris Davis (Pasadena, CA/Flintridge Prep) serving, rattled off a 10-0 run that included five Lesley errors and back-to-back kills from sophomore Eric Doherty (Millis, MA/Millis) to go ahead 16-3 in its 25-12 win.
An 8-2 run highlighted by a pair of Swarttz kills midway through the second set put the Lions out in front 16-8 as Emerson cruised to a 25-18 victory, but Lesley made much more of a contest out of the final set.
Four Swarttz kills in the early going Emerson ahead 12-3, but Lesley countered with an 11-3 run in which Lau totaled four of his seven kills to tie the set at 17-17. The Lynx forced two more late ties and took a 22-21 lead on consecutive Lions errors. With the game tied 23-23, kills from Swarttz and Davis gave Emerson the match, improving the Lions to 7-12.
Lesley returns to action two weeks from today at Emerson, while the Lions travel to MIT this Friday night.
