Lynx take second set but fall, 3-1, to Endicott

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Lesley took the second set from Endicott, but the Gulls capitalized on Lynx errors in taking the following two, winning 25-12, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16 in men's North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) play Wednesday night in Cambridge.

Endicott's (10-8, 6-2 NECVA) Travis Netherton (Waukegan, IL/Waukegan) tied for match high honors with 12 kills, while Jeremy Siden (Natick, MA/Natick) added 11 and Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) added 10.

Devendorf's 10 kills came on an error-free 15 swings, good for a match-best .667 hitting percentage made possible in part by Jeremy Schlosser's (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) 36 set assists.

Lesley freshman William Lau (Charlestown, MA/Boston Latin) totaled a match-best 12 kills, his coming over 31 attempts with three errors for a .291 hitting percentage. Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) followed with 10 kills as senior setter Stephen Siragusa (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) tossed 31 assists for the Lynx (1-19, 0-10 NECVA).

The Gulls ran away with the opening set, ending the game on a 13-3 run to seal a 25-12 victory.  In a run in which Endicott scored seven of the set's last eight points, Netherton threw down three of his 12 kills and Siden added two of his 10.

Endicott jumped out to a 6-2 lead in Game 2 on two David Olsen (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) kills, but Lesley stormed back with its own 7-1 run, this featuring three Almeida-Beers kills, giving the Lynx an 11-9 lead. With the set tied at 16-16, a 7-2 Lesley run in which Max Hoevenaar (Orlando, FL/Castle Christian) earned two of his five kills put the Lynx on top 21-17 in their 25-22 victory.

After hitting .250 as a team to take the second set, that clip was nearly cut in half, as the Lynx held themselves to a .133 rate in Game 3. Five early errors put Lesley in a 7-2 hole, but three errors by Netherton helped the Lynx pull within a point, 10-11. After a Tim Byram timeout, the Gulls broke off a 10-2 run sparked by three kills, opening a 22-12 lead in what would be a 25-19 win.

Four of Andrew Slocum's (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) six kills came over 10 attempts came in Game 4, helping the Gulls jump out to a 18-11 lead. Siden added three kills in the set, and Endicott cruised to wrap up the match with a 25-16 win.

Lesley has the weekend off before returning on Tuesday, March 1 against Emerson, while Endicott takes on SUNY-New Paltz on Friday night.
