Lynx drop season opener to MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley dropepd a 3-0 decision to visiting MIT, falling 25-9, 25-13 and 25-7 in intracity men's volleyball action Thursday night in Cambridge.

Malcolm Bean led the Engineers with eight kills and three blocks, and Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, MO/SLU High) added eight kills of his own.

For Lesley, Stephen Siragusa (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) led the way with four assists and four digs, while William Lau (Charlestown, MA/Charlestown) added four digs and four kills.

In Game 1, Lesley took a 2-0 lead on last year's No. 9 team in the nation on back-to-back Engineers errors. After MIT (2-0) tied the contest at 3-3, Lau's first college kill put the Lynx back on top 4-3.

The visitors rattled off a 7-0 run, forcing Lynx (0-1) coach Jeff Costa to call a timeout trailing 10-4, and a Bean  block capped the 11-0 run. Lesley rallied with consecutive points to pull back within eight at 14-6, but that was as close as the Lynx came the rest of the set, as  Hohenberger's service ace iced a 25-9 MIT victory.

Freshman Evan Wang (Saratoga, CA/Lynbrook) opened the second set with an ace of his own, as the Engineers opened a 7-1 lead. Lynx freshman Melvin Morales snapped the rally with a kill that pulled Lesley within five. MIT's Patrick Vatterott's (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood) kill error made it a 9-4 contest, but he made up for it with two kills on the next three serves. Lesley hung around, getting to within 18-11 on a Bean kill error followed by a Lau kill, before the Engineers scored seven of the last nine points, taking a 25-13 victory on a Lynx serve error at set point.

Another Lau kill got the Lynx to within four, at 7-3 to open Game 3, but another Bean block found the visitors ahead 12-4. An emphatic Hohenberger kill made it a 17-6 contest, as the visitors took a 25-7 decision, moving 2-0 on the season.

Both teams are next in action at Elms, with MIT facing the Blazers on Saturday and Lesley traveling to Chicopee, MA Tuesday night at 7:00.
