CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's
volleyball team accomplished a little bit of history on Tuesday
evening with a 3-0 (30-13, 32-30, 32-30) victory over Elms College
in New England Collegiate Conference.
The win marked the first time the Lynx defeated a team other than
Southern Vermont College in four years of the Lesley University
men's volleyball program.
Lesley was dominant at the beginning of the first set by taking the
first 11 points of the match. The Lynx took advantage of five
attacking errors by the Blazers and got solid service from
Mike Jack (BUENOS AIRES, Argentina/St.
George's) who recorded two aces during the opening
stretch run. Elms climbed their way back into the first set and
trimmed the Lesley lead down to six points at 16-10. Lesley,
however, rebounded to put home 14 of the next 17 points to take the
first set 30-13 in convincing fashion.
The second set featured solid play from Elms' Yonalvy Acosta
(HOLYOKE, Mass./Holyoke) and Stephen Cameron (NEWINGTON,
Conn./Newington) who had five and four kills,
respectively. For the match, Cameron tied for a match-high 11 kills
while Acosta had 10 kills total. Lesley reached set point at 29-25
but four straight points by Elms forced a win-by-two situation.
Kills by Scott Wheeler (EAST HAMPTON, Conn./East
Hampton) and Nick Assad (ANDOVER,
Mass./Andover) helped the Lynx reach a set-winning kill by
Christian Domingo (LOS ANGELES, Calif./College of the
Canyons) at 32-30.
The third set was also forced to go into extra points but two
attack errors by the Blazers sealed a 32-30 loss in the set and the
match. Assad and Wheeler each had four kills in the set and
finished with 11 and 10 kills apiece.
Lesley's Stephen Siragusa (VALLEY STREAM, N.Y./Valley
Stream) dished out 28 assists in the match while
Matt Sullivan (WORCESTER, Mass./St. John's
Shrewsbury) led the team in digs with nine.
Blazers setter Mike Martin (ENFIELD, Conn./Enrico
Fermi) had a match-high 32 assists. Along with Acosta and
Cameron, Mike Kleckner (BETHLEHEM, Pa./Freedom)
also recorded double-digit kills with 10.
Lesley will be back in action on Friday, February 12 with a road
game at Emerson College while Elms will wait until Saturday,
February 13 for a rematch with the Lynx.
