CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men's
volleyball team took the first set against New England Collegiate
Conference (NECC) rival Daniel Webster College, but the Eagles
gained composure to take the next three sets to win 3-1 (23-30,
30-18, 30-12, 32-30) for their first victory of the season. The
Lynx dropped to 1-4 on the season while the Eagles improved to
1-1.
In the first set Daniel Webster held a single-digit advantage for
much of set, but two kills by Alejandro Lazo (BOSTON,
Mass./Weston) and two aces by Nick Assad (ANDOVER,
Mass./Andover) helped the Lynx rallied for six straight points to
take a 24-20 lead. With a newly found lead, Lesley stretched the
advantage even further to took the first set 30-23.
Daniel Webster completely shifted momentum in the second and third
sets thanks to dominating play on the outside from Andrew
Smith (ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt./Essex) and Justin Masse
(HUDSON, N.H./Alvirne). Smith spiked home five of his 12
kills in the second set and Masse tallied five of his nine kills in
the third set. The Eagles took each set in impressive fashion to
take their first lead of the match at 2-1.
In the third set, the Lynx lost their advantage late in the set but
were able to force extra points. The Eagles took a 31-30 lead after
an attack error by Lesley and finally won the match on kill by
Eric Smith (CLAY, N.Y./Cicero).
Lesley was led by Scott Wheeler (EAST HAMPTON, Conn./East
Hampton) who had a team-high 12 kills and 21 digs and was
complemented with eight kills by Mike Jack (BUENOS AIRES,
Argentina/St. George's). Setter Stephen Siragusa (VALLEY STREAM, N.Y./Valley Stream) dished out 34
assists.
Daniel Webster's Chris Shannon (RONKONKOMA,
N.Y./North Sachem) had a match-high 18 kills on 50 attack
attempts. Smith and Kyle Clement (WEYMOUTH, Mass./Catholic
Memorial) shared setting responsibilities with 26 and 24
assists apiece.
Lesley will travel to Lasell College on Monday, February 8 for a
7:00 pm match while Daniel Webster hosts Newbury College on the
same day.
