Trejo double-double can't carry Lynx at So. Vermont

BENNINGTON, VT -- Senior center Jesus Trejo tallied his second straight double-double, posting 19 points and 12 rebounds, but Southern Vermont escaped with a 74-72 victory over the visiting Lynx in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball play.

Trejo paced four Lynx in double figures, but none matched Lance Spratling's game-high 31 points, which came on a red-hot 6-9 shooting from distance. Southern Vermont hit on 10-23 three-point field goals and shot 48 percent from the floor in overcoming Lesley's mammoth 50-32 advantage on the glass. For a second straight game, a late Lynx comeback attempt went for naught as Lesley fell to 4-16 overall and 1-9 in NECC play.

Lesley overcame a 15-point first half deficit thanks to an 11-0 run capped by consecutive Thorton Paul layups that pulled the Lynx to within a point, at 30-29 with 2:39 left in the half. Freshman Myles Mungcal, who also scored four points in the 11-0 run, nailed a three-pointer that tied the contest, 34-34, and a Paul jumper in the closing second made it a 36-36 game at the half.

Spratling came out of the break firing, hitting a pair of threes in starting an 8-0 Mountaineers run. A Ben Naatktgeborn jumper made it a 12-point Southern Vermont lead just under the 10:00 mark, but a Mike Kaufman three-point play help cut that margin in half two minutes later.

After a Paul three-pointer, a John Sanchez three-point play with 3:12 left gave the Lynx a 72-71 lead. While still leading by one, Lesley shut down the Mountaineers offense but squandered multiple opportunities to extend its lead, with Sanchez, Mungcal and Paul combining to go 0-4 on jumpers over the next two-plus minutes.

An Avery Mitchell jumper with 53 seconds left gave Southern Vermont back the lead, which after a Lynx turnover, the Mountaineers extended on a Spratling free throw. Spratling missed the first of his two shots, which gave Lesley a chance for the win, but a Sanchez buzzerbeater attempt was off the mark, giving the Mounties the 74-72 win.

Sanchez added 13 points and seven assists, Cobb came off the bench for 16 points on 2-5 shooting from downtown and Mungcal added 11 points.

Lesley returns to play tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. at Daniel Webster.
