First place Hawks soar past Lynx, 86-67

LEICESTER, MA -- The first place Hawks of Becker College topped Lesley, 86-67, Saturday in spite of John Sanchez's second straight game with 24 or more points.

Sanchez's game-high 24 points came on 7-12 shooting from the floor and a 9-10 effort at the line to go along with four assists and a game-best six steals.

Thorton Paul threw in 15 on 5-10 shooting from the field for the Lynx, now 0-5 in NECC play. Harold Smith added 11, but behind Becker's quintet of double-digit scorers, Lesley was no match for the first place Hawks.

Rajal Leggett opened the game in which Becker never trailed with a jumper off the opening tip and hit another that put the Hawks up 10 at the 12:29 mark. One of Ricky Clark's four three-pointers up the home team ahead 16, and a Clark steal and fast break jumper gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the half, 40-21, with 8:26 left before halftime.

Lesley responded with a 9-1 run capped by a Grant Cobb jumper, but the Lynx couldn't cut the margin to single digits, going into halftime down 53-38.

Two of Sanchez's nine free throws cut the deficit to 14, at 58-44. Sanchez, Paul and Smith each hit field goals to get within 13 with under 6:00 left, but 13 was as close as the Lynx could pull in dropping a fifth straight.

Terrance Favors tossed in 23 points on 4-6 shooting from downtown for the Hawks (14-2, 6-0 NECC), while Trae Jacobs followed with 19 points. Clark scored his 14 on 4-7 shooting from distance, adding a game-high five assists, and Leggett added 12, also handing out five assists.

Lesley (3-12, 0-5) plays host to Wheelock Tuesday night at 8:00.
