Lynx battle, but late run lifts Eastern Naz, 80-58

QUINCY, MA -- Lesley hung with the Lions through 30 minutes, but Eastern Nazarene shot 62 percent in the second half, ending the game on a 17-4 run in an 80-58 win over the Lynx Tuesday night.

John Sanchez led the Lynx (1-3) with 13 points and a game-high eight assists. Jesus Trejo added nine points, and freshman Grant Cobb chipped in with six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

From Eastern Nazarene (2-2), John Flakes led all players with 21 points and three blocks, and Chima Ezeigbo posted his second double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 boards as the Lions evened their record at 2-2.

Cobb continued his hot start to his career, as the freshman evened the game at 4-4 with a three-pointer inside the 18:00 mark. A three ball from Thorton Paul put the Lynx up 13-9 at the 13:23 mark, but a late 8-0 Lions run culminating in an Edward Allen lay-in put Eastern Nazarene up 29-20 with 3:16 left in the half.

A Trejo layup on a feed from Sanchez beat the first half buzzer, as the Lynx went into halftime trailing 31-24.

Ezeigbo led all players with 12 points and six boards in the half, while Sanchez kept the Lynx in the game with five points and three assists.

A pair of Sanchez free throws cut the deficit to five out of the half, but a Jonathan Atwater three-pointer capped a 9-2 run that increased the Lions lead to 12, 46-34 at the 12:40 mark.

Donald Morris' Lynx battled back immediately with an 8-0 run out of a Lesley timeout. Cobb's second three of the game cut the deficit to nine at the 11:34 point, and a Kris Bennett dunk pulled the Lynx to within four with 10:34 left.

The teams exchanged buckets for the ensuing four minutes, and freshman Mike Kaufman hit a three that again got the margin down to four, at 56-52.

It was all Lions from there, though, as the home team scored 24 of the game's final 28 points over the last 6:30, including a 17-4 run to end it.

Ezeigbo and Eastern Nazarene controlled the glass, outrebounding Lesley 37-30, and the Lions late run led to a 52 percent shooting clip from the floor.

After 15-16 and 11-12 performances from the free throw line over the weekend, Sanchez was again nearly perfect, hitting 5-6 from the stripe. Cobb, who entered the night hitting 4-5 from three-point range, is now 6-9 after a 2-4 effort Tuesday.

Lesley enjoys a week off before returning to action next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Somerville, MA at Tufts University.
