CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University men’s
basketball team took their only lead of the game against Newbury
College with 1:24 remaining in the game following made free throws
by John Sanchez (CARSON, Calif./Saint John Bosco) and held on to
beat the Nighthawks 50-48.
The Lynx won their second NECC game in-a-row and improved their
2009-2010 record to 6-10 (3-2 NECC). Newbury dropped to 5-10 (3-3
NECC).
Sanchez’s free throws were two of his nine points in the
game. The sophomore was 7-of-9 from the charity stripe and also
added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals to his game
totals.
Lesley’s Jesus Trejo (METHUEN, Mass./Methuen) scored a
team-high 15 points with 14 rebounds in 38 minutes on the
court.
Newbury was led by John Rowley Jr. (HARTFORD, Conn./Rockville) and
Rondell Best (TAUNTON, Mass./Brockton) who scored 13 and 10 points,
respectively.
Both teams struggled offensively for much of the game, especially
in the second half as the Lynx shot 34.6% and the Nighthawks shot
just 32.0% from the floor. Down the stretch, however, Lesley was
able to outscore Newbury 10-2 over the final 3:37 to stun the
Nighthawks.
Lesley will be in action on Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 pm at
Wheelock College while Newbury travels to Gordon College on
