Lesley snaps losing streak with victory over Wheelock

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The big men for the Lesley University men's basketball team led the Lynx towards their first victory since December 10, defeating Wheelock College 59-57 on Saturday evening.  The Lynx improved to 4-14 (1-6 NECC) while the Wildcats dropped to 5-13 (3-4 NECC).

Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) tallied another double-double on the season with 18 points and 16 rebounds.  Nine of his 16 rebound with on the offensive glass which was a major factor in the 21-9 second chance points advantage the Lynx held.  Malcolm Andrews (Medford, Mass.) also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Wildcats got a significant spark off the bench from freshman Eric Rice (Woburn, Mass.) who scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor.  Guards Max Kaim (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Kyle Pierce (Burlington, Mass.) netted 13 and 12 points respectively in the loss.  Kaim was a terror defensively as he tallied five steals.

Lesley got a significant contribution from Matt Grassa (Everett, Mass.) who registered a near double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.  Grassa hit crucial free throws in the second half to help maintain the slim Lesley lead.  The junior finished 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.

The Lynx were able to stretch their lead to seven points in the second half, but a deep three-pointer from Wheelock's Pierce would tie the game at 54-54 with just 3:50 remaining in the game.  With Grassa's timely free throw shooting and Lesley's shutdown defense in the final minutes, the Lynx were able to hold on for the win.

Lesley will host Mitchell College on February 3 at 8:00 pm while Wheelock will host Daniel Webster College on February 7 at 12:00 pm.
