Lesley splits weekend series with Vermont opponents

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Lesley University fell to Johnson State College 72-56 on Saturday and dropped their record to 5-11 (3-3 North Atlantic Conference) while Johnson State improved to 8-10 (3-3 NAC).

The Lynx were once again paced by the team's leading scorer Joe Chatman (Boston, Mass.) who finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals.  The only other double-digit scorer for the Lesley was freshman center Jesus Trejo (Methuen, Mass.) who netted 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for the game.

Johnson State got a tremendous performance out of senior guard Charlie Viana (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who had a game high 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the floor including five three-pointers.  He also contributed with four rebounds, four assists, and a steal.  Three other Badgers were in double-figures as John Foley (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Chris Lamica (Averill Park, N.Y.), and Bobby Shedd (Johnson, Vt.) complemented Viana with 13, 11, and 10 points, respectively.  Lamica's overall effort was impressive as he added seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals to his point total.

Lesley scored quickly in the first half, taking a 28-7 lead with 7:28 remaining in the period.  Johnson State rebounded nicely to chip the lead away to just four points going into the locker room with the score at 34-30.

The Badgers rode that momentum into the second half as they went on a 22-12 run capped off by a Viana three-pointer with 11:24 left in the game.  With the lead the 10, the Lynx tried to make a comeback but were unable to decrease the deficit.

After splitting the weekend contests with their Vermont conference opponents, Lesley will next face Newbury College at home on Monday January 28 at 8:00 p.m.  Johnson State will host Castleton State College on Tuesday January 29 at 5:30 p.m.
