Stellar Pitching Lifts Baseball in Sunday Sweep of UMF

THE LEAD – Stellar pitching and timely hitting lifted the Lesley University baseball team to a Sunday sweep over University of Maine – Farmington in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action, completing the four-game weekend sweep of the Beavers. Lesley notched a 5-1 win in the opener before shutting out UMF in the finale, 6-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 1)

  • Cal Caruso got the scoring started with an RBI single to center to put the Lynx on top, 1-0, in the second.
  • UMF got its only run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth, tying the score at 1-1 when Sam Parsell and Nate Coombs connected on back-to-back doubles with Coombs driving in the equalizer.
  • Lesley responded in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good on a two-RBI double to left-center by Justin Dennett.
  • The Lynx added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth as Ian Dempsey drove in Jordan Reffeor on an RBI single to center and came around to score the final run of the game on a Dennett sac-fly to account for the 5-1 final and a three-RBI day.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 1)

  • Logan Watts picked up the win on the mound with a complete-game gem, scattering four hits while striking out a career-high eight to improve to 4-2 on the year.
  • Caruso finished the game going 3-for-3 with the RBI.
  • Kevin Dorsey put together a 2-for-3 performance, scoring two runs in the win while also adding a stolen base.
  • Will Harriman (0-4) suffered the loss for the Beavers, working 5 1/3 innings and allowing all five runs on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GM 2)

  • Jason Nemergut hurled a complete-game shutout win for Lesley, allowing only three hits while striking out a season-high of seven for his first pitching win of the campaign.
  • Boone Scherer gave Nemergut all the run-support he'd need in the second, blasting a two-run homer to right to put Lesley on top early, 2-0. Dennett tacked on one more run in the frame with an RBI double, driving in Adam Budorick to move the needle to 3-0.
  • Lesley pushed the score to 5-0 in the fourth as Budorick doubled home Caruso to make it 4-0 before Dennett drove in Dorsey on a sac fly to make it 5-0 through four innings.
  • The final run of the day came in the bottom of the fifth when Dorsey singled up the middle to knock in classmate Owen Kalagher to wrap the day at 6-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GM 2)

  • Kalagher posted a 2-for-4 performance with the run scored.
  • The home run by Scherer was his second of the 2024 campaign.
  • Colby Jacobs finished the game going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
  • Ryan Sargent,, Parsell and Paul Vachon accounted for the three UMF hits while Aaron Goschke (1-3) suffered the loss working 4 1/3 innings and allowing all six LU runs.
