THE LEAD – Elms College used some early offense and strong pitching to power past visiting Lesley University on Wednesday evening, 5-2, in non-conference NCAA Division III baseball action at Mackenzie Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blazers plated two in the second on a two-RBI knock from Griffen Levesque to go up 2-0 before AJ Cook drove in what would prove to be the game-winning run in the third on an RBI double to make it 3-0.
  • Colby Arnold made the lead stand up, mowing down the first 16 batters he faced to take a perfect game into the sixth for EC until Boone Scherer broke it up with a one-out triple. Arnold was able to strand Scherer in scoring position to keep the hosts out in front, 4-0, heading into the late frames.
  • The Lynx got on the board in the seventh on a pinch hit RBI double to center by Cal Caruso to make it 4-1 but the Blazers got the run back in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single to left by Seamus Higgins.
  • In the eighth, Lesley put two runners in scoring position with just one out but only managed to score one to account for the 5-2 final in Chicopee, Mass.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Arnold (1-1) earned the win on the bump working 7.0 innings of two-hit ball while registering a season-high three strikeouts.
  • Along with Scherer and Caruso, Ian Dempsey was the only other Lynx to record a hit in the setback while Kevin Dorsey reached base twice via walks.
  • Jacob Nemergut suffered the loss going 5.0 innings and surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits.
  • Patrick Teasdale worked a scoreless ninth in relief for LU.
