WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Lesley University men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Williams College for their final race of the 2008 season, the NCAA Regional Qualifier. Both teams competed with the best Division III running programs in New England and left the race having set new records.
The men's team was without two of their runners, but the remaining athletes competed as individuals in the race without the capability of contributing towards a team score.
Sam Hunt (Washington Depot, Conn.), Matthew Hunt (Dracut, Mass.) and Brian Axelrod (River Vale, N.J.) were on the top of their game as they all defeated runners who had beaten them in previous races.
Axelrod finished in 221st place out of 331 runners with a time of 30:56.9 while Sam Hunt (32:08.9) and Matthew Hunt (33:36.4) finished in 250th and 277th place, respectively.
On the women's side, Charlotte Goff (Osterville, Mass.) placed the highest a Lesley runner has ever placed in NCAA Regional competition (75th) with a time of 24:55.6. The team as a whole finished in 33rd place out of 57 teams which was also a program record at this competition.
With the success that the Lynx have had this season, the team has set the bar for years to come as they will continue to be a legitimate cross country program in the region.
"Our young program of three years has come so far in a short amount of time," commented Head Coach Dan Flynn. "These successes will lead to more victories next season. The Lesley University cross country program exists, succeeds, and builds for the future. It should be fun to see the next chapter."
