THE LEAD— In nonconference action against the Colby Sawyer College Chargers, the Lesley University women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Chargers in both contests of a Friday afternoon doubleheader.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 1)
- The Chargers opened set one by scoring the first eight points before Lesley broke up the host's momentum and cut the deficit in half. Rayann Fatahi (Arlington, Mass.) generated back-to-back kills, and the squad also capitalized on Colby Sawyer's errors, making it 8-4.
- Despite seeing its lead cut in half, Colby Sawyer pulled away after rattling off a 12-1 run that made it 16-5.
- Although Lesley was able to grab a couple of points back and made the deficit single digits again (17-8), the Chargers closed set one with a 7-0 run.
- Colby-Sawyer once again started fast, as the Chargers grabbed a quick 4-0 lead. While the hosts continued to try to push away, Lesley lingered around and made it a four-point game (7-3) after a Chargers setting error.
- While Lesley made it a four-point game, Colby-Sawyer went on a massive 16-3 run for its largest lead of the match (23-6). During the Chargers spurt of offense, Katie Mollberg, Haley Hathorn, and Kamryn Brakemeir featured three, two, and two, respectively. While the Lynx continued to fight, grabbing two points, the Chargers secured the set two win off a service error.
- In the final set, both sides went back and forth in the beginning. After the hosts went up 4-1 early, Lesley trimmed the deficit to one thanks to two Chargers errors that made it 4-3. However, once again, Colby-Sawyer pulled away with another large scoring burst. The Chargers went on a 10-run that made it 14-3, which included kills from three different Colby-Sawyer student-athletes.
- The Lynx chipped away again and made it 14-6 after capitalizing on two more Chargers attack errors. Even though the squad stayed within reach, Colby-Sawyer wrapped up match one with an 11-1 spurt for the 3-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 1)
- Shae Thomas (Clayton, N.C.) led the offensive attack with five kills. It is her fourth time this season recording five or more kills.
- Thomas and Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) paced the Lynx with two assists each.
- Defensively, Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.) led the way with eight digs. She has posted five or more digs in her last six matches.
- For the Chargers, Brakemeir finished with a team-high eight kills. Overall as a team, Colby-Sawyer finished with 27 kills.
- Brenna Piller guided Colby-Sawyer on 16 of the team's 27 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 2)
- In the opening set of match two, Lesley jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead thanks to multiple Colby-Sawyer errors. The Chargers kept hanging around the Lynx staying within two, and when it was 5-3, Lesley, Colby-Sawyer went ahead for good thanks to an 11-0 run (16-4). During that run, Brakemeir contributed two kills, and Bree Bacon had back-to-back aces.
- Although Lesley broke up the run by capitalizing on a Colby-Sawyer service error, the Chargers secured the set one victory with an 11-1 spurt.
- After two quick Chargers points, Lesley made it a 2-1 game thanks to a Thomas kill. However, Colby-Sawyer gave themselves space after scoring seven straight points to make it 9-1. The Lynx broke things up thanks to an Alawnah Dunda (Fort Ann, N.Y.) kill. Unfortunately, Colby-Sawyer was not phased and went on another 7-0 run (16-2), which included yet another Bacon ace.
- While the Lynx continued to fight and made it 18-5, the Chargers closed out set two with a 7-1 run (25-6).
- Colby-Sawyer once again took advantage of its aggressive play. After an Alexis Mandrino ace made it 12-3, Lesley took advantage of multiple Chargers errors to make it 16-5. From then on, Lesley had a massive run of its own and was down by as little as four (18-14) courtesy of a 9-2 burst. Hall-Johnson played a massive role for Lesley in its run thanks to her three service aces.
- Even though Lesley pulled within striking distance, Colby-Sawyer ultimately earned the sweep with a 7-1 run.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 2)
- Thomas once again led the Lesley offense with four kills.
- Hall-Johnson finished with a career-high four service aces.
- Two different Lynx had two assists on the night (Gianna Indrisano (Winthrop, Mass.) and Febo).
- Mollberg posted a team-high ten kills in match number two. On the night, Colby-Sawyer had 36 kills.
- Brooke Patnode paced the Chargers offense with 24 assists. As a team, the Chargers had 32 assists.
