THE LEAD – Curry College picked up its first victory of the 2024 campaign on Friday evening topping host Lesley University, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-7) at Minuteman Gymnasium in NCAA Division III women's volleyball con-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The squads jostled for an advantage early in the frame with several lead changes leading up to an 11-11 score midway through the set. The Colonels then went on a 7-0 run to build an 18-11 lead fueled by a pair of service aces by Emma Hobart to propel the visitors to a 25-16 win.
  • Lesley bounced back and opened set two with six straight points behind the service game of sophomore setter Mariah Febo (Boston, Mass.) to go up 6-0 but Curry regrouped and managed to tie the score again at 11-11 following an ace by Kyah Earls. The Lynx looked poised to take its first set of the year, fighting to pull ahead 20-15 after a kill by Baileigh Sinaman-Daniel (Stafford, Va.), forcing CC to take a timeout. Curry reset and rattled off eight straight points to turn the tides into a 23-20 visitor lead which proved to be too much to overcome in the 25-22 final.
  • Soaring high, Curry reeled off 12 consecutive points in set three with Jasmyne Fillippini behind the service line to cruise to a 25-7 victory and earn the 3-0 sweep.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Curry win snapped a 26-match losing skid dating back to last season.
  • Meghan Abbott and Earls paced the Colonels with a match-high seven kills each while Sonja Matheson added six winners.
  • Lesley first year Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.) put up a team-high eight digs.
  • CC finished the night hitting .253 as a team while holding the Lynx to a -.186 attack percentage.
