UMPI Too Strong For Women's Volleyball in Saturday NAC Sweep

THE LEAD – The Lesley University women's volleyball program dropped a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matches to the University of Maine Presque Isle squad on Saturday. The Owls improve to 6-0 in NAC play while the Lynx open the year at 0-2 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 1)

  • After trading points to open the action, UMPI rattled off 10 straight including five aces by Mia Gutierrez (Phoenix, Ariz.) to give the Owls an 11-1 edge. They led by as many as 20 points in the set (22-2) before the Lynx closed the frame strong to manage a 25-6 score in set one.
  • Lesley opened the scoring in the second to pull ahead 1-0 but the Owls proceeding to race out to a16-2 lead, taking advantage of seven LU hitting errors in the set to post a 25-8 win.
  • The Lynx battled in the final frame, scoring 13 points but it wasn't enough to overcome 11 kills and a .364 team hitting percentage in the frame by the Owls in their 25-13 win to take the match, 3-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 1)

  • UMaine Presque Isle dominated the service game collecting 23 aces including nine by Myah Bragdon (Mapleton, Maine).
  • UMPI's Alexis Engel (Cheyenne, W.V.) ran a balanced offensive attack with 21 assists and getting eight players in the stat sheet with a kill.
  • Lesley first year Ariel Udell (Lexington, Mass.) posted a match-high eight digs.
  • Shae Thomas (Clayton, N.C.) chipped in with four kills, two kills, two aces, and one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Match 2)

  • The Owls service game stayed strong in set one recording 13 aces including seven more from Bragdon, cruising to a 25-7 win.
  • Lesley played its best set of the day in the second, scoring 17 points but the service game for UMPI remained a thorn in the host's side as they served up nine more aces in the 25-17 win including four straight by Engel late in the set.
  • The Owls finished it out with a 25-13 win in the final set to complete the second 3-0 sweep of the afternoon.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Match 2)

  • Faith Graham (Heiskell, Tenn.) and Evelyn Elijah (New Salem, North Dakota) paced UMPI with a match-high seven kills each.
  • Bragdon finished with nine aces while Engel again dished out 21 assists.
  • Thomas shared the match-high lead with seven kills for Lesley, adding eight digs.
  • Korinne Hall-Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.) led the way with a match-high 10 digs and team-high four assists.

UP NEXT

  • The Lynx are off until Friday, October 4 when they play host to Curry College at 7:00 PM.
  • The Owls return to NAC action the same day hosting Thomas College at 5:00 PM in Wieden Gymnasium.
