Cambridge, Mass—The Lesley University Women's volleyball team traveled to UMass Dartmouth for a tri-match vs UMass Dartmouth and Keene State. The Lynx fell 3-0 in both matches to slip to 5-8 on the year.
UMass Dartmouth 3, Lesley 0
Lesley held a five-point lead at 16-11 half way through, before the Corsairs took advantage of some Lesley errors and took five out of the final six points to claim the victory 25-22 in the first set.
A match-high 13 kills with just six errors helped the Corsairs to a 25-15 second set, and again the hosts played from behind the start the third. A kill by Senior Kaylee Deluga put the Lynx up 15-7, forcing a Corsair timeout, but UMass Dartmouth chipped back. Thomas hit back-to-back aces to tie the set at 18, and after the Lynx threatened to extend the match past 25, Connors was there again to place a ball down the line and wrap up the 25-23 margin.
Lesley's Anni Abbruzzese and Kaylee Deluga generated nine kills apiece, with Deluga chipping in 12 digs and Abbruzzese having 10 of her own. Freshman Tallin Goldberg had 22 assists in the match to help set up the offense for the Lynx.
Keene State 3, Lesley 0
The Lynx fell to Keene State in 3 sets with scores of 25-8, 25-13, and 25-22. The Lynx showed improvement each set but it wasn't enough to hold off the Owls.
Keene State exploded out of the gates in the opening set, scoring the first 11 points of the match. An attack error by Keene State followed by a kill from junior Cassidy Wygonik out the Lynx on the board at a score of 12-2. Six more kills and a couple service errors out the Owls up 19-4. The Lynx never got closer than 17, as the set ended on a Lesley attacking error.
Lesley came ready to play for the second set, keeping it a back and forth battle in the early stages of the set. The Owls were ahead 9-7 before they took control of the set and cruised to a 10 point lead and never looked back.
In the third set, the Lynx showed more promise tying the game up a nine a piece after the Owls came out on a 7-2 run. Kills by Abbruzzese and Senior Sarah Hollis sparked the Lesley offense, and a service ace gave Lesley the 13-12 advantage half way through the set. Both teams continued to trade points, with Lesley holding the lead at 20-19 before Keene went on a 5-0 run to claim the match victory.
The Lynx were led by Abbruzzuese with 8 kills, while Deluga and Wygonik each had 10 digs.
Lesley next hosts Saint Joseph's College Monday September 25th for an 8pm start.
