Abbruzzese, Deluga Power Women's Volleyball To Season-Opening Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's volleyball teamed slammed past Pine Manor College 3-0 tonight at the Nicholas Athletics Center to secure a season-opening victory for the first time since the 2010 season. The Lynx used set scores of 25-7, 25-13, and 25-14 in the clean sweep.

Lesley juniors Anni Abbruzzese (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) and Kaylee Deluga (Dennis, Mass.) powered the offense with ten kills apiece while swing .227 and .588, respectively, on the night. Fellow junior Sarah Hollis (Hudson, Mass.) added six kills for the hosts while freshman Kelsey Dobbins (Henniker, N.H.) added three in her collegiate debut. Senior Vera Bednar (Helmond, Netherlands) posted a career-high with 24 assists. The Lynx also used their serve to their advantage as they knocked down 14 aces on the night. As a team, Lesley swung a robust .324 from the floor.

Pine Manor freshman Keisha Hadorn (Yokosuka, Japan) led the way for the Gators with three kills while freshmen Alexa Leon (El Centro, Calif.), Camarie Brantley (Houston, Texas), Viyanni Johnson (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Kendra Williams (San Diego, Calif.) each chipped in with a pair. Brantley, Johnson, and junior Rachel Julien (Brockton, Mass.) anchored the defense with five digs apiece.

The Lesley defense was outstanding as they limited Pine Manor to just a -.092 hitting percentage on the night. Abbruzzese led the way with eight digs while senior Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) corralled seven. Hollis and Dobbins each record a solo block and Deluga and sophomore Ashley Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) teamed up to turn away another Gators attempt.

The Lynx will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Salem State University for a tri-match with the Vikings and UMass-Dartmouth.
