Women's Volleyball Charges Past Rams

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Lesley University women's volleyball team won their seventh match in their last eight tries as they powered past host Suffolk University 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) tonight in non-conference action. The streaking Lynx improve to 10-7 on the year while the Rams drop to 5-16 overall.

Lesley senior Anthea Rathjens (Sudbury, Mass.) tied a season-high with eight kills to lead the Lynx offense while also accounting for two blocks on defense. Sophomore Ciara Bruning (Centerville, Mass.) finished with seven slams and classmate Sarah Hollis (Hudson, N.H.) and senior Jess Reynolds (Londonderry, N.H.) each added four. Senior Danielle McDonald (Lilitz, Pa.) anchored the defense with a match0best 16 digs while fellow senior Emily Marden (Fremont, Calif.) led all players with 22 assists to go with her 13 digs.

Freshman Madison Martin (Middleburg, Fla.) and sophomore Jane Buckley (Plaistow, N.H.) each knocked down four kills for the Rams while freshmen Chidera Nwankwo (Canton, Mass.) and Talia Lombardo (Windham, Maine) finished with three apiece. Sophomore Heidy Barreiro (Dominican Republic) led the defense for the hosts with 13 digs while fellow second year Liz Kerek (Holbrook, Mass.) dished out 15 assists.

The Lynx were in control from the start as they rode Reynolds' serve on their way to a 6-1 lead to open up the first set. Late in the opener with Lesley holding a 19-15 lead, Hollis started and capped a 6-0 spurt with pair of kills to take a 1-0 match lead.  

The momentum would continue for the visitors in the second set as Marden served the Lynx to a 14-0 lead before rolling to the 25-13 set win.

The Rams opened the third with an 8-7 advantage but the lead would not last as the Lynx gained separation with a 7-0 streak before taking the third 25-20.

Lesley swung .213 for the match while holding their counterparts to just a -.020 percentage on the night.

The Lynx will return to action on Saturday with a tri-match at Becker College with the Hawks and Pine Manor College. The first match is slated to start at 11:00a.
