Lesley ousted from NECC's by DWC in three

NASHUA, NH -- Daniel Webster advanced with a 3-0 NECC Women's Volleyball Tournament victory over visiting Lesley University Wednesday night, ending the Lynx 2012 season at 7-15.

Lesley freshman Danielle McDonald tied for match-high honors with 13 digs, and sophomore Rachel Frederickson led the team with 22 set assists. Playing in her final collegiate match, senior Megan Ortwein totaled seven kills on 19 errorless attempts, adding eight digs on the defensive end, but Lesley hit just .053 compared to the Eagles attack of .274 as Daniel Webster advanced to the conference quarterfinals.

The Lynx scored four out of five points in snapping a 13-13 tie in Game 1 to go ahead 17-14, the largest lead yet by either side. Daniel Webster answered back with four straight points to retake the lead, and with the set tied at 22-22, Chelsey Crawford kills gave the Eagles leads at 23-22 and 24-23. Her service error, however, re-tied the set at 24-24, but a Jennifer Finnernan block of an Anthea Rathjens attack and a Frederickson set error gave Daniel Webster a 26-24 win.

Four Lynx attack errors helped send the Eagles out to an 8-2 lead in a sloppy middle set. Lesley handed the Eagles five straight points on set and attack errors in digging an 18-9 hole that forced a Tricia Lawler timeout, and a Crawford kill and another attack error capped a 9-2 run in the Eagles 25-15 win.

A 6-2 Eagles run led by three Ally Hayden assists opened up a 9-3 lead in Game 3. An Ortwein kill brought the Lynx back within 13-10, and back-to-back kills from Ortwein and fellow senior Kaitlyn Miller again made it a three-point game at 15-12.

Daniel Webster responded with a 7-2 run fueled by two kills each from Finnernan and Brier Temple in going ahead 22-14, and Crawford's match-high 10th kill from Hayden's match-best 27 assist capped the 25-17 victory, sealed the 3-0 win and ended the Lynx season in Nashua in the NECC first round for a second year in a row.

Rathjens totaled five kills with only one error on 10 attempts for a team-high .400 hitting percentage. Ortwein added a pair of service aces, and Miller, also playing in her college finale, totaled six kills and seven digs.

The Lynx all-time assist leader with almost 1,900, Miller became a standout outside hitter as a senior, ranking second on the Lynx in kills with 121. Also a former All-NECC Honorable Mention and four-year contributor, Ortwein totaled 550 kills and over 750 digs as a Lynx.
