Attack holds Lynx back in 3-1 loss at Bay Path

LONGMEADOW, MA -- After three straight 3-1 wins to open NECC play, the Lynx ended up on the wrong end of that score, being bumped from first place Saturday afternoon by Bay Path in New England Collegiate Conference women's volleyball play, losing 22-25, 17-25, 25-21, 9-25.

Senior outside hitter Megan Ortwein led the Lynx with seven kills and 30 attempts for the Lynx, which hit just -.038 as a team. Sophomore Rachel Frederickson totaled her first double-double of the season with a career-high 12 assists to go with 10 digs, and Danielle McDonald added a team-best 22 digs as Lesley fell to 3-1 in the NECC and 5-10 overall.

Bay Path's Arriadne Sykes totaled a match-high 13 kills, and teammate Kacie Bayreuther led all players with 23 kills, adding three kills in four tries as the Wildcats (7-10, 1-4 NECC) picked up their first league win of the season.

The Lesley attack held the Lynx back through the first two sets, in which Lesley totaled 16 kill errors to only 15 kills. Bay Path, meanwhile, got out of the gate with a 5-0 lead to start Game 1 and used a late 5-0 run to take a 24-17 lead in Game 2, putting Lesley at a sizable disadvantage down two sets.

Two Ortwein service aces and a Danielle Johnson kill put the Lynx in front 4-1 to start the third, and two aces from freshman Suriya Patel sparked a 5-0 run after which Lesley led 11-4. A Johnson service ace later put the Lynx in front 22-14, and Lesley held on for a 25-21 victory.

With a chance to pull to a 2-2 tie, Lesley's attack reverted back to its prior form, as four different Lynx issued attack errors in spotting the Wildcats an 11-2 lead. Lesley would only pull as close as seven points at 14-7 as Bay Path cruised to a 25-9 win.

For the match, the Lynx attack posted a -.038 attack percentage, while the Wildcats hit .087.

Lesley returns to Cambridge on Tuesday, playing host to Daniel Webster at 8:00 p.m.
