Volleyball takes NECC opener, 3-1 at Elms

CHICOPEE, MA -- Lesley snapped a six-game slide with a 3-1 win at Elms College in the Lynx New England Collegiate Conference opener Saturday afternoon.

Outside hitter Danielle Johnson led all players with 13 kills and 20 attempts for a season-high .300 hitting percentage, while fellow sophomore Alyson Finbow and senior Megan Ortwein added nine kills each as the Lynx improved to 3-9.

Defensively, sophomore Rachel Frederickson led all players with a season-best 26 digs, and classmate Anthea Rathjens totaled a match-high two solo blocks and a block assist.

Back-to-back Finbow kills sent the Lynx out to a 6-1 lead to open the afternoon, and Lesley held at least a two-point advantage the remainder of the set, hanging on for a 25-21 victory. Elms answered with authority, as two kills each from Alexandra Mack and Erika Murphy put the Blazers in front 13-5. Elms gave Lesley new life with four straight errors to bring the Lynx within 23-22, but a Johnson attack error and Christina Martin kill capped the Blazers 25-22 win.

A kill and a service ace from Ortwein propelled Lesley to an 8-1 lead to open Game 3, and Lesley led by five or more the remainder of the way, going on to win comfortably, 25-16. The Lynx were forced to come back in their Game 4 win that clinched the match, as a pair of early Mack kills put Elms out in front 8-3. Johnson, Ortwein and Finbow all totaled kills in a 6-1 run that tied the set at 10-10, and a 5-1 run bookended by Johnson kills put the Lynx in front 24-22, as Lesley held on for a 25-23 victory.

As a team, Lesley hit .178 and held the Blazers to an .031 hitting percentage.
