Women's volleyball can't contain red-hot Corsairs

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Lesley University women's volleyball fell to 2-8 after being trumped 3-0 by red-hot UMass-Dartmouth, which improved to 13-1 on the season by upending the Lynx 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.

Dartmouth freshman Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, MA/Vo Tech) led all players with 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. Corsairs libero Linsay Boulay (Swansea, MA/Case) got down for a match-best 22 digs, while setter Jessica Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) led all players with 31 assists, also adding nine digs.

Sophomore Danielle Johnson (Waterford, CT/Waterford) led the Lynx with five kills, while Anthea Rathjens (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) added four kills on 11 error-free attempts for a team-best .364 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Alyson Finbow (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) rejected a match-best three solo blocks, but the Lynx couldn't come out on top in any of the three tightly-contested sets.

Kills by Johnson and Kaitlyn Miller (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill) put Lesley in front 2-0 to start the night, and a Goncalves error put the Lynx back on top 8-7. Back-to-back kills from UMass-Dartmouth's Brianna Perry (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford) sparked a 5-0 run that swung the Corsairs on top 12-8, and the visitors would lead for good, finishing out a 25-19 win on another Perry kill.

The early going of the second set was equally as tight, with two Corsairs errors putting Lesley on top 9-8. Lynx freshman Danielle McDonald's service ace (Lilitz, PA/Manheim) tied the contest at 11-11, but Dartmouth answered with consecutive kills from Antoine and never trailed again, with a Perry kill again closing out the win, this time at 25-18.

Another McDonald service ace pulled Lesley on top 9-7 to open the third set, when the Corsairs rallied behind three kills from Antoine to take a 12-11 lead. Johnson tied the set back up at 12-12 with a kill, but Dartmouth answered with an 8-2 run featuring a pair of kills from sophomore Madison Shea (Millis, MA/Millis), who closed out the 25-21 win with another kill.

Johnson led all players with three aces, while McDonald had two for the Lynx, which totaled six kills to five for UMass-Dartmouth.

For UMass-Dartmouth, Perry totaled nine kills on 21 attempts for a .333 average.

Lesley returns to play Thursday night at 6:00 in non-league action at Mount Ida.
